Maggots could save NHS big money

Maggots as a means of medicine is not a new idea. They have been used throughout history from the hill people of Northern Burma to the Confederate physicians of the American Civil War.

The reintroduction of maggot medicine has been touted for the last few years but, unsurprisingly, the reception from potential patients has not been a warm one.

However, researchers in Bridgend have now developed a new method which may change minds. The new dressing has the maggots within it so you no longer have to consider watching them tucking into your flesh.

Steve Thomas of the NHS affiliated company Zoobiotic, which is the principle supplier of sterile maggots for medicinal purposes, claimed the treatment could save the NHS £160m a year.
